Description:

A flat dark GTK-theme with ergonomic contrasts. It supports Gnome, Cinnamon, Xfce4, Mate and Openbox. Theme customizations for Firefox, Thunderbird and Inkscape are additionally included. Shades-of-gray is available in seven color variants:

• Gray
• Arch
• Cerulean
• Firebrick
• Harvest
• Orient
• Patina

Installation:

Arch Linux: You can install the AUR package gtk-theme-shades-of-gray [1]

Manual Installation:

Extract and copy the chosen theme folders either for personal use into directory ~/.themes/ or for common use into /usr/share/themes/.

Customizations:

Each theme folder contains an app-gadgets directory with additional theme files for Thunderbird, Firefox and Inkspape.

Thunderbird: The folder assets and the file userChrome.css in folder Thunderbird-Shades-of-gray contain a Thunderbird theme adapted to Shades of gray. Copy both to this location:

~/.thunderbird/name-of-your-profile/chrome/assets
~/.thunderbird/name-of-your-profile/chrome/userChrome.css

Lightning uses its own bright colors in default setting. The option for using the theme colors is hidden as Accessibility. Open the Thunderbird settings and activate the checkbox Optimize colors for accesibility in calendar area.

If you change a Shades-of-gray theme color, it is not necessary to copy the file again. You can simply comment out the current theme color in userChrome.css (Thunderbird and Firefox) and comment in the new theme color value.

Firefox: The file userChrome.css in folder Firefox-Shades-of-gray contains a theme adaption to Shades-of-gray. To enable the customizations, copy the file or its content to this location:

~/.mozilla/firefox/name-of-your-profile/chrome/userChrome.css

Firefox uses widgets of the current GTK3 theme in websites that have not designed their own widgets for forms. With dark themes this is ugly and input fields, checkboxes etc. are difficult to use (e.g. black font in dark input fields). To fix this behavior the file userContent.css contains color-neutral form widgets. Copy the file or its contents to this location for enabling:

~/.mozilla/firefox/name-of-your-profile/chrome/userContent.css

You should choose the dark style in Firefox to get a consistent dark appearance.

Inkscape: Original colored icons in Inkscape are hard to identify in dark themes. The file icons.svg in folder Inkscape-icons contains bright icons. To use them in Inkscape, the file must be stored in this directory:

~/.config/inkscape/icons/icons.svg

Requirements:

• GTK+ 3.20 or above
• Pixmap theme engine
• Murrine theme engine

+Finally a sane dark theme which is 1) is elegant 2) differentiable widgets 3) Easy on the eyes.

If I ever make a distro, this will be the default GTK3+ theme

+Chrome theme is not working properly, I would prefer the same color as the rest of theme ( gray) for top panel instead of black and this theme desperately needs the compact version, thanks!

In the file Shades-of-gray-FAQ.html I have added how you can change the Gnome panel color.
If you think something is not working properly, please post your bug report on Github (see link above).

I'm sorry, I think I misunderstood - you meant the Chrome/Chromium panel. In version 69 the GUI was changed (hard-coded). Please call "chrome://flags/#top-chrome-md" in urlbar and select "Normal". If that doesn't solve the problem, let's please discuss this on Github.

Did you select GTK+ in "chrome://settings"?

I just love this theme set. One thing I just noticed in the Cerulean variant. In Clementine music player the lower spectrum analyser is not the cerulean light blue, but rather a very dark blue and looks out of place. This is only happening with the cerulean variant. The darker Arch blue variant has the analyser as nice lighter blue and the other variants have colors that all match. Issue is only with the cerulean one (which happens to be my favorite!). Running Arch w/XFCE. It's also the same on Arch w/Cinnamon.

Is the system color set selected in Clementine?
Preferences → Appearance → Use the system default color set
The colors of the spectrum analyzer should then be displayed as expected.

Yes, theme settings are correct in Clementine. It's only the Cerulean variant that has a mismatched analyzer color. All the other variants theme correctly in Clementine. For some reason the Cerulean makes the analyzer a very dark blue, a much different blue than it should be.

I can reproduce it. It only affects the Block analyzer, all others (Bar-, Boom-, Turbine analyzer) process the color value correctly.
Clementine gets the color value from gtrc. This single hex value is the only difference between the gtrc theme files.
I have tried different hex color values - some are parsed properly, others are replaced by fallback color. I think it's is a problem in Block analyzer converting hex color to QColor format.

My apologies Werner, false alarm. I'm tweaking the theme and it got a bit confusing. All works well on Ubuntu 18.04 but in 16.04 it is squashed; so above gtk-3.20 would be OK

Hi Werner, Thanks for a great theme. I'd like to use this as my dark theme. I have noticed that in Ubuntu 18.04 tweak tool (gtk 3) has no buttons showing although they work. Is it to do with the theme? Any tweaks that can be done?

Sorry, my reply took some time. I have set up a virtual machine with Ubuntu 18.04 (I normally use Arch Linux). Gnome-tweaks looks right to me with Ubuntu- and Gnome-Shell:

Probably a problem with Wayland? In case of discussing please post your issue on Github (link above).

I really like the looks of the theme but I am having problems resizing windows. When I move the cursor to a window boundary I am not getting "arrow plus bar" cursor and am not able to grab the window frame. I am running ubuntu 18.04 and don't have this problem with other themes. I am running with DMZ-White cursors via Gnome tweaks but have tried others. Perhaps I just need to tweak something else. Thanks.

@edada
Thank you for your bug report!
I had accidentally commented out a necessary instruction in gtk.css (line 4294). The bug is fixed now in 1.0.3.

Great piece of work pall! A few remarks though (for now): 1) i think the separators in the menus should be visible (some shade of grey) 2) the gtk3 sub-menus should not be distanced from their parent menu, it breaks the consistency with gtk2. Anywayz, it's definitely a '+'
