1. click on "Properties"
2. click on "Background" tab.
3. click "Solid color"
4. click the color selector and choose a dark color.
5. then play on "Style" slider to get the desired transparency.
Hope this would help.

Following your suggestion, I was only able to make the panel itself transparent and NOT the menu (drop down menu) when I click it.
I still want to know how to make the menu (drop down menu) transparent when I click the main menu. Please share with me (us).
Many thanks.

1. You should be using compiz and emerald.
2. click on "System"
3. click "Preference"
4. click "CompizConfig Settings Manager"
5. in your "CCSM (Compiz Settings Manager)" make sure the following plugins is enable (checked):
- Opacity, Brightness and Saturation.
- Opacify.
6. click on "Advance Search".
7. on the plugin window, scroll down till you see "Opacity, Brightness and Saturation" ..click it
8. at the "Window Specific Settings" click "New".
9. enter the following including the parenthesis in the "Windows" text box: (type=Menu | PopupMenu | DropdownMenu | Tooltip)
10. at the "Window values" text box, enter your desired transparency settings. ...I used "70".
hope this could help.
