Description:

I think this makes a perfect glossy black theme that's sleek and powerful.
This theme, like most other dark themes, goes best with a vibrant and colourful background which makes everything stand out all the more.
If you want a copy of my background or backgrounds I've made like that one leave a comment, and if I get enough comments about it I may upload them to gnome-look.
Hope you enjoy, feel free to post me ideas or changes you would like made to the theme as it is still a work in progress.
If you prefered an older version of the theme which has features that no longer exist I may be able to send you a legacy version.

Note: The toolbar I'm using is a modified version of the one that comes with the theme, it is tailored to my screen size and needs which is why I didn't include it, if anybody wants a version don't hesitate to ask.

Once downloaded extract the .zip file and install the .tar.gz file as you usually would a theme.

How to get transparency:

1) Open Compiz Config under System> Preferences> CompizConfig Settings Manager
2) Click "Opacity, Brightness and Saturation" to open it.
3) Under the "Window specific settings" add these three rules and values.

Tooltip | Menu | PopupMenu | DropdownMenu 80

(name=gimmie_applet) | (type=Dialog | ModalDialog) 85

utility | dialog 95

you may want to play arround with the settings to get them exactly as you like.

Credits:
Big thanks to all the creators of the themes listed below for letting me use their graphics and coding, if not by actively giving me permission by giving their work a GPL license (woo, go freedom)

This theme was originally based on the coding and graphics of BlueSpcae II:
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/BlueSpace+II?content=78633

The buttons for the Metacity and Emerald themes is from this emerald theme:
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/LaGaDesk_Two_Black?content=108096

The rest of the graphics for the Metacity and Emerald themes were slightly modified from these:
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Kore+Suite?content=54701

And of course not forgeting my favourite icon theme (so far :P) Azenis Icons:
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Azenis+Icons+(working+title)?content=107544

I used the code for the text boxes from the UE 2.2 theme:
http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Ultimate+Edition+2.2+Theme+Beta?content=100855

A FireFox theme which suits this style very well:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/8218

I used to use this icon theme but I've found a better one since then:

Hey, just updated to 4.2, only minor changes to some little things, i haven't really had much time for this recently, i've been busy with other projects.

Thanks loads for the appreciation, i'd love to help. First off the taskbar, send a printscreen of you desktop (full resolution) to oversword@googlemail.com with your icons+stuff arranged exactly how you want them, I'll get cracking on a version for you as soon as i get it.
That wall paper and many like it can be found in my picasa gallery: http://picasaweb.google.com/oversword/ArtRage
Some of them are good but a lot are just sketches and ideas, enjoy!
Also you can check out my flash based site:
http://www.oversword.co.uk/
I do a lot of work that's not just GTK2
AND i have yet another website where I keep updates on the projects I'm doing:
http://www.cam.oversword.co.uk/
But i'm thinking of changing the name so don't bookmark it yet :P.

Both the looks for those sites were based on my theme.
Please take a look around, leave some comments, tell me what you think, it's always nice to meet a fan :D

And with the theme, if you ever want to change anything or have any ideas please don't hesitate to tell me.
Thanks

I love your theme but so far I have been unable to install it. I've tried the usual method that has worked with many other themes, i.e., dragging the .tar or. gz file into the System-Preferences-Appearance Window but I just get a message saying it appears it is an invalid theme. I've extracted the .tar and .gz and tried to manually install the theme in the same System-Preferences-Appearance Window but no luck. Could you give me instructions on the easiest way to do this? I am eager to try it out. Thanks

Hi,
I've recently become aware that the deviantArt link doesn't work as i expected.
It seems to have trouble with multiple extensions (such as .tar.gz).
The other link should work fine like any other theme.
For the devianArt high quality one you need to keep extracting archives until you see the metacity and gtk folders. Then zip those up in a .tar.gz and install as you usually would.
I'll try and come out with a fix for this in a new version soon.
Tell me if the problem persists.

Sorry for the delay guys, I made 3.8 a couple of days ago but didn't submit it. Before i came to submit it i'd already made some big changes, such as the addition of a Metacity theme to the package.
I thought these changes were so big that i jumped up to 4.0 as a substantial milestone.
Hope you enjoy

Really GOOD JOB!
But when I use your theme and I open openoffice.org 3.0.1 I can't see the icons menu bar...

What I do wrong? I'm using Ubuntu jaunty jackalope.

I use all the same software.
I don' use OOo that often so I'm not entirely sure what your problem is.
Are you using the icon theme I recommended too? cos that might have something to do with icons...
I have Writer open in front of me, you're right, I see no icons, I'm not sure if I'm supposed to TBH.
Are you sure you've checked all your tool-bar preferences and stuff.
If you can't figure it send a labeled screen shot to oversword@googlemail.com (me) and I'll have a look

Yes, I use Dark System Icon theme too.
I change with Human Icon too but I don't see OpenOffice icons in both ways.

It only happens when I use your theme. If I change the theme I can see all icons in the toolbar.

I send you a screenshot to your mail.

THANK YOU for you fast answer!!!
And really really good job!

ok i know what the problem is
open office doesn't show the icons when you're using a dark colour scheme.
The icons existence seems to be determined by the Window background part of the colour scheme.
The darkest value that the icons appear at is #272727 and my theme is #101010, much darker.
so I'm afraid i can't fix this because it would change the entire colour of my theme.
I've looked at many fixes online but none of them work. If i find a fix i'll let you know

The solutios that you gave me work fine for me!!!!

"Open writer or another OOo app.
Go to Tools > Options...
Click the view bit on the list of things at the side
In the drop down menu for the icon style choose Human at the bottom (not (automatic) Human at the top)"

I know it's ugli, but so functional for me! Thankyou!

Nice Job!

Great theme, thanks.

I can't get the icons installed though, downloaded from the link you provided, but the installer just disappears.. (have left a message on the authors page, but thought I'd ask here just in case anyone had the same problem).

odd, i've never experienced that
i'm downloading it again to try it out
check your deleted items and stuff to see if you can find it, because it would be a hassle to download again.
i'll get back with more later.
