Description:

This is an extensive set of icon themes based on GNOME and Tango, with some inspiration from Human, Tango Generator, Elementary, and other open source projects. The project's goal is to integrate closely with gnome-icon-theme, while greatly expanding its available icons and allowing users to choose from 7 completely different and unique color schemes. With the additional source pack, an unlimited number of complete color variations can be rebuilt from source.

The icons and their color schemes are designed to complement my Shiki-Colors GTK Themes and their additional artwork.

There are 7 color variations: Brave (Blue), Wise (Green), Human (Orange), Noble (Purple), Wine (Red), Dust (Chocolate) and Illustrious (Pink).

GNOME-Colors consistently themes 99% of default icons + 1000's more in almost every popular linux distribution. Every single icon included in the set is drawn perfectly at each and all sizes, so you will never have to see a blurry icon ever again!

Important, must read or clowns will eat you:
* To install, drag and drop the .tar.gz file into GNOME's Appearance Preferences, or extract it and copy the gnome-* folders to /usr/share/icons as administrator (i.e. sudo nautilus /usr/share/icons in Ubuntu). The gnome-colors-common folder is a required dependency. You MUST install it in order for all the icon sets to work correctly.

* You may alternately use the included Makefile for system-wide installation, just type make install as administrator or make user-install for per-user installation. For more options, type make help.

* You may want to install the 'extras-gnome-colors' package for extra icon themes (Liferea, Comix, Exaile, etc.) by following the instructions in the readme.

* If you installed the icons through the appearance preferences, for the icons to theme root/admin applications in Ubuntu, you must type in a terminal:
sudo ln -s ~/.icons /root

* In Ubuntu, you can use the official PPA repository for easy installation and upgrades. For Ubuntu Karmic Koala, you can simply run apt-get install gnome-colors to install from Ubuntu's universe repositories. The packages are also available in Debian Sid.

* Visit the GNOME-Colors project page for bug reports, feature requests, SVN and more downloads:
http://code.google.com/p/gnome-colors/

* Consider donating a small amount to the GNOME-Colors project if you wish to support it, or to show your appreciation. You can do so by clicking on the "donate" button next to the download section.

You're doing great job for entire community of GNOME users, but it's really necessary to desaturate more and more icons? I'm really missing original orange Nautilus icon and current b/w suck..

Report

C

perfectska04

No more icons will be desaturated, although there is a reason for Nautilus being colorless; better consistency with nautilus-actions icon, better consistency with icons based on gnome-icon-theme's file managers - and being the most commonly used icon, subtle and unified colors suit it best.

That said, still - the main reason is that future versions of gnome-colors will make it possible to create infinite color variations in minutes. After the nautilus changes and other newly added icons, now all the color variations consist entirely of "safe-to-recolor" icons. This means that in the future, you will be able to recreate a complete gnome-colors theme with any color of your liking - by simply inputting three color codes.

Then again, it's up to the community wether they prefer being able to have more color on a handful of icons or be able to paint gnome-colors any color they like.

Im using the PPA to install gnome-colors. Is it still recommended to remove the current version before installing a newer version?

Report

If you're using the PPA, everything should be handled by the packages - so you can just relax and not think about updates, icons or whatnot. Just enjoy your summer.

I'd still make really sure not to have an old version in ~/.themes or ~/.icons (the ones installed through Appearance Preferences) - If you do, that version is used instead of the one the PPA/Makefiles install.

First off, I love this theme... for the most part. The bold saturated colors with different folder icon colors is awesome!

The RB is unrecognizeable with a block and some fiery bars as either a music player or as rhythmbox.

VirtualBox blends in too much with the gnome-system-monitor.

Report

C

More than folder icons are changed, everything that is not in the "common" package such as devices, desktops, actions, folders, applications, etc changes color depending on the theme you choose :)

As for virtualbox, both it and the system monitor icons have been fixed - that shouldn't happen anymore with the 5.1 version I just uploaded.

And yeah, Rhythmbox needs an update. I'm just not sure what design would work... It needs a "playing" and a "not playing" icon, that's why I've stuck with the current ones for so long. Mockups/ideas for Rhythmbox icons are appreciated.

I commented on this a long time ago. It was great then, but it's improved tremendously. I converted my dad to Ubuntu and installed this without thinking.

In my project, (https://launchpad.net/memorizer) I have to use some icons which are unavailable or crappy in most icon themes. Just to let you know, I copied blam.svg, gtk-edit.svg, and gtk-info.svg, and credited you, of course, as Victor C. If I did anything wrong with that, just let me know.

Keep up the amazing work! I'd love to help, but I'm no artist. :)

(This should be default in Ubuntu!)

It's alright, although the blam icon is originally from the blam! feed reader. It was included for some time to help icon coverage in all sizes, but now that the blam package ships them in all sizes it was removed.

I've used this before and now updated. However, what happened to the start-here icon? Did you decide to trash it? Is there a way to get it back?

Report

Also, you must remove any previous gnome-colors installation.

It's always been recommended to do so before any update, but if you're upgrading to 5.0 from any older version, you must remove the older version.

I've installed by dragging the Gnome Brave folder to '.icons' under my home folder.

Works fine by the ways you mentioned. Thanks!

No problem! The package has been made over 4 times smaller by using a common icon library, so it's understandable that if you're used to installing just one set - it won't work correctly from now on.

Installing the gnome-colors-common folder is an extra step if you only plan to use one color variant, but it's convenience and overal file size considerations make it worth it. You can now just download a small 4.5 MB package which unpacks to only 20 MB of disk space, and get 6 complete icon sets!

Ways of installing correctly:

* Dragging the gnome-colors-5.0.tar.gz file into Appearance Preferences.

* Extracting the .tar.gz file, and copying the gnome-* folders including gnome-colors-common to /usr/share/icons as administrator.

* Extracting the .tar.gz file, and running make install for system-wide installation or make user-install for per-user installation.

* Using the GNOME-Colors PPA or Ubuntu Karmic Koala and running sudo apt-get install gnome-colors

Either one of those ways of installing will work.

It's still there. Did you install the icons correctly? You must install the "gnome-colors-common" folder, which contains almost all of the icons. If you don't install this folder, you'll only see action icons and folders.

Great idea of making gnome-colors-common which contains icons which were the same in every set! (:

Report

C

perfectska04

No problem.

Besides smaller sizes, you can create your own folder with only the icons you like - and then inherit from gnome-colors-common. That way you can have your own small, personalized icon set that will be safe and unchanged even if you update gnome-colors to a newer version.

Now that most of the categories icons have been updated (good job btw! looks very nice), the Internet one looks a bit bland. A slightly more 3D look or shinier continents should make it fit in a bit better, I think.

Fixed in SVN. I just added some transparency gradients to the highlight stroke in gnome's globe. It's a simple change, but it does make a difference and it doesn't look inconsistent with all the other gnome icons that have similar globes.

I'll take a look. I don't want to replace the actual internet icon, since icons based on it are used everywhere in GNOME - but a little bit or gloss or better gradients should make it look rounder and not cause inconsistencies with other icons that have the same globe.

Using version 5.0, Nautilus now gets the home folder icon in GNOME-Do Docky, instead of the file browser (cabinet) icon. Is this because of something you've changed, or is it to do with the new version of GNOME-Do that I also just installed?

Report

I haven't really changed anything regarding file manager icons other than adding new ones a while ago, perhaps it has to do with docky?

You can quickly switch to another icon set and see if it also happens there, if it does - then I imagine docky or nautilus are using the folder icon instead.

Oops, I should have thought of that.

You are right, it's GNOME-Do's doing.

against the others, i have to say there are some things i really dislike from version to version. first: your theme is still my fave, and i am using it as default. but: since the updates from the 4th, i cannot understand why you changed some icons. i am bovvered about firefox icon (it doesn`t really fit to the other icons in your set(imho)), the new desktop icon and the systemtool icon too. i think, it is a step back, to use some icons from the default gnome-theme, despite some of them doesn`t fit well to your theme. another thing are the the emblems. i saw you removed some of them. after an update, there were some missing. i know the reasons for that, but i wouldn`t care about "a few" more icons. i rather prefer a clean, fitting and complete iconset to a small set . nether the less, i welcome the new home icon and the dust-set of course. just some critics, still fan of your work!
