Description:

This is an extensive set of icon themes based on GNOME and Tango, with some inspiration from Human, Tango Generator, Elementary, and other open source projects. The project's goal is to integrate closely with gnome-icon-theme, while greatly expanding its available icons and allowing users to choose from 7 completely different and unique color schemes. With the additional source pack, an unlimited number of complete color variations can be rebuilt from source.

The icons and their color schemes are designed to complement my Shiki-Colors GTK Themes and their additional artwork.

There are 7 color variations: Brave (Blue), Wise (Green), Human (Orange), Noble (Purple), Wine (Red), Dust (Chocolate) and Illustrious (Pink).

GNOME-Colors consistently themes 99% of default icons + 1000's more in almost every popular linux distribution. Every single icon included in the set is drawn perfectly at each and all sizes, so you will never have to see a blurry icon ever again!

Important, must read or clowns will eat you:
* To install, drag and drop the .tar.gz file into GNOME's Appearance Preferences, or extract it and copy the gnome-* folders to /usr/share/icons as administrator (i.e. sudo nautilus /usr/share/icons in Ubuntu). The gnome-colors-common folder is a required dependency. You MUST install it in order for all the icon sets to work correctly.

* You may alternately use the included Makefile for system-wide installation, just type make install as administrator or make user-install for per-user installation. For more options, type make help.

* You may want to install the 'extras-gnome-colors' package for extra icon themes (Liferea, Comix, Exaile, etc.) by following the instructions in the readme.

* If you installed the icons through the appearance preferences, for the icons to theme root/admin applications in Ubuntu, you must type in a terminal:
sudo ln -s ~/.icons /root

* In Ubuntu, you can use the official PPA repository for easy installation and upgrades. For Ubuntu Karmic Koala, you can simply run apt-get install gnome-colors to install from Ubuntu's universe repositories. The packages are also available in Debian Sid.

* Visit the GNOME-Colors project page for bug reports, feature requests, SVN and more downloads:
http://code.google.com/p/gnome-colors/

* Consider donating a small amount to the GNOME-Colors project if you wish to support it, or to show your appreciation. You can do so by clicking on the "donate" button next to the download section.

Hey perfectska04, I just updated to 5.3 via PPA and now the Gnome-Colors logo has gone from the "Applications Places System" applet (it is replaced with the Ubuntu logo) .. is that deliberate or a bug ??

Thanks

Report

Yes, that's deliberate for the Debian package. For Debian you can have a look at the README.Debian file. There is described how you enable the branding. Unfortunately this does not work for Ubuntu (because they dropped the replacement mechanism). For karmic I have opened a bug report: https://launchpad.net/bugs/407817

Should I re-enable the branding for the PPA packages?

Yes please.

I am currently uploading 5.3-0~ppa2, which will have the branding enabled again.

The logo is still shipped, but I think the PPA/Debian packages are built with the new "unbranded" target, to avoid users reporting their ubuntu/debian logos as being replaced.

If you install normally "sudo make install" or by copying the folders to /usr/share/icons you'll get the gnome-colors branding as you'd normally do.

Are you going to make a saved searches icon? The gnome default one doesn't look nice with you theme. If you decide to make one, the icons are in the places folder of an icon theme.

I don't understand, have you checked the gnome-colors places folders? Saved search icons and its syslinks have always been included with the set.

Because gnome-colors is very complete, chances are - when you see a stock gnome/tango icon that doesn't fit in with the rest, it's most likely the application forces said icon instead of gnome-colors not having it.

I redownloaded it and now it's there. It's strange it wasn't there the first time.

It's not a bug, it's intended - to keep consistency with the reboot/restart icon and add some color variation. The icon itself also doesn't work too well with the scripted recoloring - as it requires more colors than the recolorable palette allows for, so I doubt it'll be made recolorable in the future.

I see. I'd like to know if there is a possibility to create a specific icon to m3u files, different from audio icons.

Cheers :D

If the file extension supports it, a playlist icon can be created... Although it depends on wether the mimetype can be actually themed or not, or what the naming spec required is.

But by all means, please post this, any icon requests or other information related to implementing the icons in the google code project page, at the "Sticky: feature requests and missing icons" topic in the "Issues" tab. That way I can keep track of things better and it's less likely that I'll forget.

Can we suggest programs in need of icons?

If so, heres some:

Galculator
Gtkam
K3b
Leafpad
Orage
Wicd

There's a sticky bug report in the google code page for icon suggestions.

I won't add icons for applications that already supply theirs in all sizes (leafpad) or KDE applications (k3b) since it's redundant, but if the application does not fall in the above categories and can be themed (i.e. it'll actually use a custom icon) I'll take a look.

perfectska,
Do you have plans to add icons for Ooo (not the icons for the launchers; toolbars')? :)

Theming openoffice is not done from an icon theme, but from the app itself.

If someone wants to make one, feel free!

I personally think it's better to urge openoffice devs to do away with their icon themes, and use as many icons from the current icon set as possible.

You can already have it. Just download the source pack and make a theme file with the desired color palette!

For next release, an "extras" package will probably have "gnome-tribute" as well as industrial/aluminium and dark variations. You can wait until then, if you don't feel comfortable building it yourself from the sources - but they won't be part of the main set or have shiki/arc to match.

Oh man making your own icon colour theme can be really fun !! I love inputing a bunch of random colours and then laughing at the result .. I created some really ugly ones and ones that looked quite good !!

Here is a site which generates some 4 colour pallets you can use:

http://colorschemedesigner.com/

Report

C

Thanks for the site, it's really easy to get a 4-color palette from it!

Another way to have fun with colors is to install "agave", which is a great color scheme designer.

Although I do agree, while some colors palettes look great - some make the icons look like they came out from a george romero film. Either way, the version in SVN now allows for mix-n-match, so you can specify multiple palettes for different types of icons.

Hi my friend, you are a great, great artist and I don't know how to thank you for your awesome work...

I also have a request...can you do a Gnome Foot in "Gnome Color Style" and share it to allow me to replace the default start here logo in your icon set? Human color, of course...
I like the Gnome Foot...but I can't find one that match with this great icon theme...
Only if you have time, obviously...

Thanks man!!!

The next version will have an install-unbranded option, so if you use that, the gnome-colors logo will not be installed and the theme will just inherit Ubuntu or whatever other distro branding you may prefer.

As for the GNOME foot - you can just do the following command (you need GIT)

git clone git://git.gnome.org/gnome-icon-theme

Then just browse to ~/gnome-icon-theme/ICONSIZE/places and you should be able to change the start-here.svg GNOME foot to any color you want with Inkscape. Just click on a dark shape - click on an orange color in the color toolbar and you're done, click File > Export and you'll get PNG versions. Then you can use them for any icon theme as your start-here icon.

PerfectSka, thanx for releasing the source pack, which allows for color customization. I've thought that GNOME-Colors could use a silver/gray set, a gold set, and an aqua (or teal) set, and now, I'll have the tools to easily do it myself. This icon theme already ROCKS, and it's gonna ROCK even more, as far as I'm concerned. :-)

Thanks!

We're already working on more customization (i.e. alternate color palettes for mix and match color-schemes like gnome-tribute) so that grayscale or uncommon colors will not look too lifeless!
