Description:

This is an extensive set of icon themes based on GNOME and Tango, with some inspiration from Human, Tango Generator, Elementary, and other open source projects. The project's goal is to integrate closely with gnome-icon-theme, while greatly expanding its available icons and allowing users to choose from 7 completely different and unique color schemes. With the additional source pack, an unlimited number of complete color variations can be rebuilt from source.

The icons and their color schemes are designed to complement my Shiki-Colors GTK Themes and their additional artwork.

There are 7 color variations: Brave (Blue), Wise (Green), Human (Orange), Noble (Purple), Wine (Red), Dust (Chocolate) and Illustrious (Pink).

GNOME-Colors consistently themes 99% of default icons + 1000's more in almost every popular linux distribution. Every single icon included in the set is drawn perfectly at each and all sizes, so you will never have to see a blurry icon ever again!

Important, must read or clowns will eat you:
* To install, drag and drop the .tar.gz file into GNOME's Appearance Preferences, or extract it and copy the gnome-* folders to /usr/share/icons as administrator (i.e. sudo nautilus /usr/share/icons in Ubuntu). The gnome-colors-common folder is a required dependency. You MUST install it in order for all the icon sets to work correctly.

* You may alternately use the included Makefile for system-wide installation, just type make install as administrator or make user-install for per-user installation. For more options, type make help.

* You may want to install the 'extras-gnome-colors' package for extra icon themes (Liferea, Comix, Exaile, etc.) by following the instructions in the readme.

* If you installed the icons through the appearance preferences, for the icons to theme root/admin applications in Ubuntu, you must type in a terminal:
sudo ln -s ~/.icons /root

* In Ubuntu, you can use the official PPA repository for easy installation and upgrades. For Ubuntu Karmic Koala, you can simply run apt-get install gnome-colors to install from Ubuntu's universe repositories. The packages are also available in Debian Sid.

* Visit the GNOME-Colors project page for bug reports, feature requests, SVN and more downloads:
http://code.google.com/p/gnome-colors/

* Consider donating a small amount to the GNOME-Colors project if you wish to support it, or to show your appreciation. You can do so by clicking on the "donate" button next to the download section.

Why did you change the joystick to cards? The joystick looked much better to me. Plus, the Games category is for more than just card games.
If it is because you think a joystick is outdated, may I suggest a gamepad instead?

There wasn't an icon for games in the past, the theme only inherited the icon from gnome-icon-theme, and said icon was a bit outdated.

The new icon is a bit more appealing - although you're right, a joystick or gamepad would be even better.

If I can make a better looking joystick/gamepad in the future, i'll consider replacing the cards. In the meantime - if you want the joystick back, you can just remove the card icons and the theme will inherit the old ones from gnome-icon-theme.

you seem to have an icon for nearly everything :-)
just another little critism:
the red arrow in the "save" icon shouldn't be red, rather green or something. red commonly signals danger.

very nice icon theme!
just a littele critism:
would you mind to change the color of the gtk-close icon to something greyish like in tango? the red reminds to much on "cancel".

the buttons play, forward , backward being white kinda don't work.
:/ it makes mp3 players look plain, like rhymbox it looks like the old "Gnome" icon set being white.

This change was made some time ago due to request and usability concerns, as less distracting color-neutral icons were better for media actions.

However, in older releases (where these icons have color) should still be available in the deprecated download section of the google code page. Just grab an earlier package - get these icons from /*/actions/ and replace the neutral ones in a current version of gnome-colors.

Hi there!

I've been waiting for the folder icon redesign, and now you did it. Thanks for it dude, keep it straight (I mean the folder icon, I didn't like the way the folder is curved in previous release ^^)

Keep it up man ...

It's been a while since the last update. Here's a preview for the next release. Newly redesigned folders and folder-xdg support for Karmic/GNOME 2.28:

Feel free to check SVN for more, and any input on the new folder design is welcome.

Hello, I'm making some wallpapers and splashes to match the Gnome-colors and shiki themes and I need the color palette you used, can I have it in GIMP format?

Report

nate8nate

The pallet is included in the package that contains the icons.

Hello again, I don't have mauch information about the whole licensing thing yet, so I have a question, do I need your permission to release something matching the Gnome-colors and using it's color palette? (sure I'll mention your work in both situations).

Report

C

perfectska04

Sorry for the late reply. As for your previous question, the palette is included as an SVG file. Also, the source package includes text theme files with all the color codes used in the creation of the recolored icons.

As for your current question, the license is GPL-2. You have the freedom to modify/improve/contribute/expand it without any legal issues as far as the GPL allows.

Thanks, I use the PPA that's why I didn't see it.

and BTW, you made the most beautiful icons and themes I've seen in Linux so far.

thank you and keep the good work.

The Icon set looks very nice, the only thing I dont like and makes me not want to use the set is the rainbow logo you have for the Gnome foot logo.

I would suggest making the theme sets with color corresponding gnome feet and not your logo..

Do you have any plans to/have you already explained why you haven't made an updated icon for the Power Management icon?

As it is, the battery icon really clashes with your Shiki-colors theme (and any other dark theme, for that matter). It is okay on battery power, but it looks even more out of place when it is charging. It could really benefit from the same treatment you gave the Network Management icon.

Report

Kmetamorphosis

Nevermind. I read your stance on it on your Google Code page.

Report

C

perfectska04

The power management icons got a bit of an upgrade upstream, if you're using Karmic they will look much better. They'll also appear a bit larger and more usable, as a related gnome-panel bug was fixed.

Thanks for the speedy response. I have another question. The GDMs you provided for Shiki-colors are very well done. Do you have any plans to modify them into lock-dialog screens? I noticed the New Wave theme provides a lock-dialog screen, but it isn't neutral enough to integrate well with Shiki-colors.

Report

C

perfectska04

The problem is that there is no GUI tool to install/apply lock dialogs. I know tech-minded people don't see this as a problem, but for example - if you installed from the PPA and lock dialogs are installed, there wouldn't be any intuitive way of applying the software without having to google related instructions.

That said, there are some unofficial lock screens based on Arc-Colors right here in gnome-look. You can certainly use one of those.

Thanks for the suggestion. I found exactly what I was looking for. If anyone else is interested, here is a link.

Hey,

I reinstalled my system and therefore downloaded Gnome-Colors again.

But strangely the Firefox icons included in the Extras package are looking quite official. Is there any way to access the "old", more tango-looking icons for Firefox?

That being said I want to thank you very much for your efforts concerning your Colors-Series.

I love them all. :)

They were removed due to licensing issues. You can go to the Google code page and download an older version if you want them.
