Hey, I just have a few questions (I guess the answers apply to any Ambiance suite?). I'm on Mint 17.x series, Cinnamon.
I want to edit a theme (considering the existing number of themes in every suite, making a feature request would be ridiculous :D) in a few ways. The problem is, I don't know anything about coding :D

I want to make the window titles appear at the center, instead of the left corner. Somehow, I figured out that I need to edit metacity-theme-1.xml in the metacity-1 folder; specifically, the values of x under <draw_ops name="draw_title_text_normal"> (line 54) and <draw_ops name="draw_title_text_unfocused"> (line 62).
After a lot of trial and error, I've found something that finally works the way it should (other solutions sort of worked, but the titles were always a bit offset, usually to the left; it's the case even in built-in themes - it seems only Adwaita and Mint-X have perfectly centered titles). I've copied "(0 `max` ((frame_x_center - title_width / 2) `min` (width - title_width)))" from Mint-X's metacity-theme-3.xml (below line 209). Is this ok? Is there anything else I should change (for any reason)? It looks fine, behaves normally. Just asking.

Also, I'd like to trim down the window border a bit. If I'm not wrong, in Ambiance it's 30px thick. I'd like it a bit thinner, kind of like in Mint-X, where it's like 26px, I think. How do I do that, without ruining anything (like the y axis of the window title and buttons, the gradient, etc.)?

Sorry for all of this nitpicking.

Cheers

hi,
your port of ambiance is great, in fact the original one is so bug intensive,your versions should be default.

am just wondering if every gtk3 theme has to be ported to scss?.

It only makes sense if a theme has heavily backdrop support (to keep code at half of total size) and a very similar look for every element that is defined in the same way.
on ambiance i don't know if its worth the effort porting it (think no, cause of its not really repeating source code structure).

on the other hand, adwaita has scss ?compiled? to css.

Ya know. I am not 100% sure whats going on with that. Its not going to be a simple thing to do. Its highly unlikely I will be doing that for the Non-Flat color version as I simply dont have the time and this theme is a lot more complicated then the flat one. I am considering it for a new theme I am re-writing.

I dont know if the Ubuntu Team will be doing that in 3.18 the theme seems a litte neglected at this point in time. And I guess it is understandable as there re-writing Unity in QT. But I think they still need a gtk theme. Ambiance is in pretty ruff shape (The GTK 3 half) I have tried to fix things up and even send them back but no one really seems to care right now.

At this point in time however SCSS is not required on GTK 3.18 it will work with both. I dont know if and when they they make it mandatory. There really isnt much info that I can find on it. I get the proposed benefits of being more efficient and better? But ~700 kb for a CSS theme is not that bad in my opinion and they run pretty fast and fine... have for years.

Not sure. but SCSS may make themeing out of reach for some. Quite of few theme people I know are not going for it and are making a exit from the scene but they are tired and burned out anyway I think.

Sigh I dont know.

Thanks for all the great work!

There's just one thing I came across - when I apply any Ambiance/Radiance Colors or Ambiance Blackout Colors theme (specifically, in the Controls section, pic 1), and select an item on the Desktop, its icon turns completely black (making it invisible on a dark background) and there's no shading around the text (2, 3). As usual, it's a bit lighter with right-click, but still too dark (4). Other themes remain unaffected (5, 6).
Apparently, it's a bug only in Mint 17.2 Cinnamon (either upgraded or freshly installed). Not in 17.1 or 17. Not in Mate, for example. Also, only on the Desktop, not inside a file manager (7, 8), and with any icon theme (default or custom) applied.

The pics:

Thanks for letting me know about this. 17.2 is supported by our the 14.04.8 branch. Its nearly 1 year old GTK code now so I figured they would leave it alone but I guess they are trying to add new stuff or change how nemo works. I am gonna have to backtrack to fix this. The issue is I don't want it to break other desktops since Mint and Cinnamon are the only ones who changed this it may pose issues to other desktops if I change what needs to be changed.

But I will test and do my best to get a fix out very soon. Thanks for the heads up.

Ok I spoke with the Mint guys and they where super helpful. I found the fix and it was super trivial it's bassily Cinnamon expects the selected color to be defined as "theme_selected_bg_color" but some themes define it as "selected_bg_color" They may fix this in a later Cinnamon update but in the mean time we can fix it on our end. Hope to do that soon. Thanks again I was running LMDE so I did not come across this.

Thanks! It works awesome. I'm glad it wasn't a more complicated issue.
If you could just update the Ambiance Blackout Colors Suite too, that would be perfect.

Some context menus don't have solid background color. For example, you can see it clicking on trash icon on the panel(not desktop). I hope I'm not alone with this problem. Please, fix it.

Thanks for your comment on this.

Unfortunately this is a long running issue that appeared a few years ago in stock ambiance. It has something to do with MATE (And Gnome 2 back in the day) Using the panel background instead of a menu background for those menus. I can check what can be done again but If I recall changing it made part of the panel a solid color and not use a panel image. But things may have changed and I might be able to find a way to fix I will see what can be done about it.

One other thing of note is this is not a issue on Ambiance & Radiance Flat because it does not use a panel image just a solid color.

Upgrade from Mint 17 Mate to Mint 17.1 Mate all OK, except...

For the Window Appearance I use [RAVEfinity] "Ambiance-Orange" with Ubuntu font to get back to the Ubuntu 10.04 look.

Now, in Caja, opening initial file manager window view OK, but when opening a new tab, default displaying as Icon mode, the caption font is not visible, greyed out, or only the faint shadow emphasis. Changing to list mode the font is perfectly OK, in Compact view the font again is not visible. All subsequent tabs opened exhibit the same behaviour. Only in Caja file manager, all other applications OK.

There is some disscussion on the Mint Forum: http://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=206&t=184732

Thanks for your comment and report on this. I will look into getting this fixed, Not sure why this broke for you on a small update to 17.1. Gonna do my best.

Small workaround: Try dragging a background color into caja under backround preferences.

FYI: With Ambiance-Blue theme, I prefer Thunderbird main window to look like Nautilus - dark toolbar and sidebar, etc. Therefore I use this with a couple of minor tweaks:
https://github.com/horst3180/Vertex-theme/tree/master/Thunderbird/Vertex/chrome
(There's also a similar userChrome.css for Firefox there)

1) Changing the tab container bgcolor slightly using this at the top section:

background: -moz-linear-gradient(#3E3E3E, #474747) !important;

2) Adding these at the end:

/**************************** Folder Pane ***************************/
#folderTree treechildren {
background-color: #5E5E61 !important;
color: #F3F3F5 !important;
}

#folderTree > treechildren::-moz-tree-cell-text(hover) {
color: #FFA500 !important;
}

/**************************** Attachment Pane ***************************/
#attachmentView {
background-color: #546BCF !important;
color: #F3F3F5 !important;
}
#attachmentSaveAll,
#attachmentSaveAllSingle {
background-color: #546BCF !important;
color: #F3F3F5 !important;
}

/****************************** Status Bar *****************************/
statusbarpanel {
background-color: #37393B !important;
color: #F3F3F5 !important;

Now that I've made Ambiance-Blue my standard theme together with your new Vibrancy-Full-Dark-Blue icon theme, I have only a few issues in the way to achieving perfection, and one these is this -- as you can see in the screenshot:

I'll appreciate very much if you can help me sort this out.

This is nautilus on Unity? Ubuntu 14.04 or 14.10? If you can please send me a tar of your custom/patched theme (Just the one color as you mention) and I will see what I can do and what the issue is.

Glad I found your comments it gets crazy for me at times my apologizes.

Yes, this is Nautilus on Unity (Ubuntu 14.10) and I also noticed the same problem in gedit so probably it's probably something to do with the text color on tabs in all gtk3 apps (similar tabs in gtk2 apps like my recent favorite text editor KKEdit have dark text on light tab bgcolor). Unfortunately it's beyond my amateur skills to fix this...

Report

FYI: I've found a fix for this by chance. They say there's a bug somewhere in Unity / Overlay Scrollbars which causes problems in most themes (changing bgcolor to black from time to time), and lately I've found out that creating ~/.config/gtk-3.0/gtk.css with the following contents solves this problem. In deed it also changed this tab txt color to a dark color.

GtkPaned,
GtkEventBox {
color: @fg_color;
background-color: @bg_color;
}

GtkPaned:backdrop,
GtkEventBox:backdrop {
color: @fg_color;
background-color: @bg_color;
}

FYI: I've also finally managed to achieve this (in Ambiance-Blue) by adding "synaptic.css" to gtk-3.0 styles with the follwing contents (imported from Greybird).

/* Synaptic's toolbar */
GtkWindow > GtkVBox > .dock,
GtkWindow > GtkVBox > .dock > GtkHBox > GtkToolbar {
padding: 6px;
border-style: none;
background-image: linear-gradient(to bottom,
shade(@dark_bg_color, 1.0),
shade(@dark_bg_color, 0.88)
);

color: @dark_fg_color;

box-shadow: inset 0 -1px shade(@dark_bg_color, 0.7);
}

FYI: I've finally managed to tweak this by replacing the present toolbar section in gtkrc with the following:

style "toolbar" {
bg[PRELIGHT] = "#5c5c5c"
bg[NORMAL] = @bg_color_dark
fg[NORMAL] = @fg_color_dark
fg[SELECTED] = @selected_fg_color
fg[INSENSITIVE] = shade(0.5, @selected_fg_color)
xthickness = 0
ythickness = 0
engine "pixmap" {
